COUNTERPOISE LAMP

This lamp uses the gravity and the principles of counter-balance to articulate its function and flexibility with ease. It has inspiration in Magewappa, a traditional Japanese bent wood craft found in Odate,. Japan. The vision was to design a lamp with flexibility, which can be used as a table lamp and task lamp as well. It can be lowered or raised with just a nimble adjustment with hands to transform its function and expression. The metal shaft is bent at the top to articulate the lamp in a different angle; this transforms the function from a night light at the lowered position to a task lamp in raised position. We explored the possibility of magnetic force initially, but gravity seemed more natural and effortless for the purpose.

The form of it and the functional attributes make it quite a playful object. It relies on the principles of cantilever locking using the earth's gravity and weight imbalance for staying on the vertical shaft on any desired position. The Matt black soft round base and the shaft with the wood /cork lamp on top make a contrasting yet harmonious combination. It is pared down and all the hardware is invisible, making it very inconspicuous. The LED light is diffused for a comfy and warm illumination.
